Feed-grade urea in bull feed

Ruminants use two sources of protein for protein supply in the small intestine:

Microbial protein that is formed from ammoniac in the rumen and feed-grade protein that is not broken down as it passes through the rumen (UDP).
Because of their special nutritional physiology (rumen), ruminants are able to use feed-grade urea as a source of nitrogen. The microbes break down the feed-grade urea into ammoniac in the rumen. The ammoniac can then be used by the microbes as a source of nitrogen for growth and formation of microbial protein, improving the bulls' protein supply. Microbes need a sufficient supply of readily available energy in the rumen to be able to use feed-grade urea.
